Understanding the fundamentals of the design of site grading to obtain positive drainage and provide the framework for a building or landscape design is critical to the success of all types of designs.

Course participants will learn these fundamentals and apply them to in-class and homework assignments over five weeks. The dates for this course are all Sundays: January 23, 30, February, 6, 13, andSessions will be recorded and can be viewed after class.

Because the management of the movement of water is the primary purpose of grading, participants will learn how to hold and move water on a site; how to grade roads, driveways, paths; house and building sites; and how to address problem drainage areas. The course will start with the basics of cut and fill and will include how to grade driveways, roads, house sites, gathering areas, and accessible paths.

Slope requirements will be explained and some basic math formulas will be used. Each class will start with the introduction of a new grading skill, followed by practice exercises, and individualized instruction. The class is self-paced, allowing students to move faster or slower as needed, however, the lecture portions will be presented as scheduled over the five-week period. Lectures will be recorded and links provided to participants prior to, during, and for a short time after the course is finished.

This course is for design professionals with minimal grading experience as well as landscape design students and architecture students preparing for the site design portion of the licensing exam and other design professionals who want to address problem drainage areas by moving or holding water. Prior to class participants will need to print out exercises for use in class. Printing at 11 x 17 inches is preferred with 8. Kim Erslev is a member of the faculty at the Conway School where she teaches landscape design, site engineering, and graphics.

Computer rendering of a design for the Conway town square that creates a rain terrain, top image shows dry conditions, bottom image shows flooded conditions.Designed to hold water rather than allow drainage, a rain terrain works as a sponge, combining ecological engineering with landscape architecture and hydrology to maximize water absorption and minimize runoff. The Markham Square design proposed for Conway will be surrounded by a green infrastructure of streets and auto parking, featuring low-impact development treatment landscapes, Luoni said. The landscape design for the square features living walls, wire mesh container gardens and footbridges, rookeries as landmarks, espaliers, and sculptural butterfly gardens that call attention to landscape systems. Water-loving trees such as poplars and willows absorb water through their root systems.
