Blood has become a special sort of fluid. Blood is not a simple liquid like water, but is a semi-liquid substance. In blood we have white and red blood cells, which give the fluid its colour and which also carry out different actions, but a kind of energy, by means of which all living things continue to live. Blood is still something special, but as long as we do not see it in this way, we look upon it as a substance which is merely active. And yet all blood is something which is not active, in other words, all blood has a certain degree of life in it.

When we say that a living being lives, we mean something more than just life. We mean that there is a definite, real energy in the organism which is connected with the universe. In the human body there are two such energies. The one, the nutritive blood, is connected with the lungs and the mouth. The other one, the blood from the brain, is the life-force of the organism.

In the first place, this blood supplies the brain with nourishment, and in the second place, this blood carries the instructions from the brain. For instance, when we sleep, when we stand up, or when we work, it has different functions. When we stand up, the blood leaves the brain and moves down into the feet, and when we walk, the blood also moves outwards from the brain, as far as the feet and legs, as the centre. The movement of the blood from the brain to the feet, as it does in the case of walking, is more powerful than if the blood were carried by the nerves to the feet. The brain's function in connection with the blood is to carry orders to the body, and from the body to the brain.

Every thought is associated with the brain's blood.And by thought, I mean not merely the thoughts that occur when we are awake, but also the thoughts which occur in the case of dreaming. This blood is connected with the whole universe. It also affects the blood in the earth. It is possible to know about the blood in the earth by measuring the vibrations of the stars.

When the brain's blood begins to flow upwards, and thus starts towards the brain, it does not travel in a direct line. It often moves round the spine. And in this way the blood from the brain goes as far as the neck. The blood from the head travels from the head to the body of the human being. But then, on reaching the body, it enters the lungs, and so through the spleen and stomach. From the lungs the blood enters the intestines, and from the intestines into the liver. And then, when it reaches the liver, it reaches the heart. And when it reaches the heart, it flows into the aorta, and then passes through the veins, through the jugular vein, into the brain.

The blood of the human being goes from the head to the head, until it reaches the central part of the brain, where there is the mind-stuff. If the mind-stuff is there, then it can see the blood. But mind-stuff that is not there, like the blood, is not able to see anything. If the mind-stuff is not there, then the body cannot feel pain. And if it is present, then the mind-stuff can see both itself and the blood. So that the mind-stuff can see the blood, it must
