Landscape design certification requirements

Landscape certification is in place to protect those who are working in the field. Certification helps prove that the landscape work has been undertaken by a trained professional, and ensures that the work has been done to the high standards set by the Society.

Certification helps protect both the industry and those working in it.

What are the requirements?

The Society provides two methods for certification. The course includes all the standard materials and handouts required by the Council for Approval of Landscape Professionals (CALP). You can take the course on the spot, with our instructor, or in our training centre. In the training centre, you will be given a copy of the course notes, a 30-page booklet containing all the information required, a CD-ROM containing all the videos and animations, and you will be given the DVD of the first module in advance. You will be sent a certificate when you pass the course.

Professional experience

To gain certification as a landscape professional, you will need to provide evidence of professional experience.

This can be:

the official certificate of qualification from an institution approved by CALP

your level of professional experience (for example, in years worked as a landscape professional)

one of the following:

a written statement that includes the number of hours you have attended CALP courses and any CALP workshop/exhibition where you have been a judge.

work experience which satisfies the Council.

work experience which, when combined with your professional experience, satisfies the Council.

The Council reserves the right to ask for further evidence, and there is no minimum period of time in which this must be completed.

Learning and work experience

You will have the opportunity to show your skill and professionalism at a CALP seminar or workshop.

To be eligible to show your skill at an approved CALP seminar/workshop, you will need:

two years of work experience in the field,

to have obtained at least 40 hours of training approved by CALP,

to have passed an approved CALP course, including all the assignments and the tests.

You can work your hours for CALP in these approved courses or you can apply to become a member of the Society.

How much does it cost?

The course fees, excluding the costs of the course materials, are $49 for CALP approved courses, $29 for courses accredited by the Ministry of Parks, Sport and Tourism, and $15 for courses accredited by the Ministry of Lands and Forestry. For more information about the course fees, contact us.

The fees do not include any overhead costs, so it is essential that you have the time to commit to the course.

Pricing for the training centre includes the course fees.

How long is the course?

The course runs for three hours.

There is a session each Tuesday from 9.30am to 3pm and Saturday from 9.30am to 12.30pm. These sessions are delivered in an all-day workshop.

The training centre has a dedicated classroom with internet access for any resources or support that you may require. There are three break out rooms that have personal computers with internet access, and tea and coffee is available.

There are no lectures in the training centre.

The training centre will be open during the busiest time in the landscape industry. We may have to put in a request to open up the training centre at other times, which will be decided on an individual basis.

All works completed in the training centre are yours to use. However, it is required that you attend all the sessions, at least once, before the certificate is issued.
