Here in Hawaii, Naupaka Kahakai can be found on almost every beach. Naupaka thrives in full sun and needs very little water once established in the ground. We suggest planting this hardy hedge every two feet to ensure maximum thickness. This particular croton, scientifically known as Codiaeum Variegatum, varies in leaf colors and shapes.
Some leaves contain blends of red, pink, orange, yellow, white, black and green while others include solid patches.Crotons that reside in extreme heat will sometimes result in burnt leaves, therefore we recommend planting in partial shade with light rainfall. Well-drained, slightly acidic soil, with slight traces of magnesium, zinc and copper is best for vibrant leaf colors. This native flowering shrub of Hawaii is recognized by its dark, glossy green leaves and red to orange hibiscus blooms.
Once established the hibiscus will require watering every couple of days. We find it best to plant in well-drained soil with full-sun to partial-shade. Though they can grow upwards of 10 feet tall, they are best kept at feet. These beautiful flowers were once used as a mild laxative and an all-natural dye. There is no arguing that hibiscus make for beautiful hedges and can tolerate pruning often.
