This shrub, called Viking chokeberry, was developed from a bush native to eastern north America which was widely used by Native Americans to preserve meat due to the high levels of antibacterial and antifungal properties of the juice made from the fruit. It is called a chokeberry because the tartness of the berries make a person choke when they try to eat them.

Masses of fragrant white blooms cover this native shrub in spring providing nectar for birds and pollinating insects. Extra large dark purple-black fruit and brilliant red fall color are end of season attractions.

Although the fruit is too tart to eat fresh, it is a sought after component of health drink juices. Viking grows to about 6 feet high and 5 feet wide and prefers full sun but will tolerate part shade although fruit production will be diminished.

It tolerates a wide variety of soils, even boggy soils, making it suitable for a range of gardens and uses such as borders, rain gardens, screens and hedges. Viking does not require a pollinator but will sucker, so either locate in a position where suckering is not an issue, or remove as needed.
