What we offer
This practical and hands-on course covers all aspects of horticulture to help you develop and advance your skills in any aspects of the trade, from planning and planting gardens, to flower arranging and garden design. You will develop your knowledge of the plants in the park, and you will learn how to use the plants to produce different effects in the garden. You will also learn how to repair and maintain gardens, and how to work with children.
During the last 6 weeks of the course you will focus on practical aspects of horticulture in the parks and gardens. You will learn how to describe the plants you see, how to select the right plants for the job, how to design and landscape a garden, and how to approach maintenance and preparing plants for use in the winter. You will also get a chance to improve your skills and apply your knowledge to design and maintenance in the parks and gardens.
You will also get the chance to work with our horticultural staff to understand the work involved in the parks, to learn how to use different types of equipment, and you will get the chance to learn new skills as the course progresses.
You will also get the chance to partake in a practical outdoor skills course, which includes learning how to use a range of tools including rakes, shovels, axes and axes, a mower, hedge shears and clippers, as well as how to use a chainsaw.You will also be taught how to use a climbing frame, a planting frame, a wheelbarrow, how to apply different types of paint to buildings, how to apply metal and wood finishing paints, and how to work on building sites. You will also get the chance to work on a new range of tools, including a torch, pickaxe, spade, rake, and a wheelbarrow.
What you will gain
This course has been designed to give you the skills and knowledge needed to develop your skills and abilities in the park and garden. An apprenticeship is a pre-employment training scheme where you will be employed as an apprentice for a period of time. You will gain qualifications that will be valued by employers, and which you can use throughout your career.
You will be taught practical skills including how to use a range of equipment, different tools and how to work on building sites. During the course, you will be taught how to make the most of the park and gardens that you live in and you will be taught to work on the whole aspect of horticulture. This course is a great opportunity to develop your personal skills, and you will also learn how to work as part of a team. As part of the course, you will gain practical experience of a variety of different areas within the parks and gardens, such as maintenance, plant collection, renovation, and design. You will receive training and experience in the following areas:

You will also gain an understanding of healthy living and how to care for yourself and others.
Through completing this course, you will gain an understanding of plants in maintenance, working with different types of people including children, and you will develop your knowledge of plants and the plant world.
What we expect from you
You must be over 16 years old and must have the appropriate qualifications, skills and experience.
You must be able to demonstrate an aptitude and willingness to learn in order to make it possible for you to complete the course successfully.
You must be able to work independently without supervision and to carry out your own responsibilities.
You must be able to meet the standards of our apprenticeship.
You must be willing to provide at least 1 set of fingerprints for the purposes of criminal record checks.

What we offer
Our factory based horticulture apprenticeship is a professional programme that provides young people with the opportunity to develop an exciting career in horticulture working for Coventry City Council. You will be trained in all aspects of horticulture, including plant care, flower design, plant identification, plant propagation and propagation, garden design and maintenance, as well as many other aspects of horticulture.
Horticulture apprentices are employed by Coventry City Council, and as such, you will be paid a salary that is in line with the national minimum wage.
