My Experience Purchasing a Memory Foam Mattress

Dealing With Mattress Shopping

Over the years, I have watched consumer information shows on purchasing a mattress and read articles on the subject. It seems the mattress industry has the mattress market rigged against the consumer. If one looks at a brand and model in one store, that brand might be available in another store but the model name, number, and covering will always be different. The manufacturer does this on purpose, which makes it impossible to comparison shop. I not only find this frustrating, I find it dishonest.

My understanding is that mattresses need to be replaced about every 10 years. Mine had exceeded that and it was getting lumpy. Indeed, the edge was beginning to slope. If I rolled within inches of the edge, I felt as if I was sliding off.

I could no longer ignore my need for a new mattress and would have to go face mattress salesmen pushing the sale of a mattress that would make them the most commission. As I was working up the courage to face the task, I came across an advertisement on the Internet for a mattress in a box delivered to your home. I was impressed with so many things about the structure of the mattress, as well as the no-hassle home delivery.

The Most Trusted Information Comes From People You Know

I discussed it with one of my friends who said she just had visitors who stayed at a local inn and raved about the mattress they slept on. They were so impressed they asked the inn staff who the manufacturer was. It was Tuft & Needle and one of the women purchased one upon her return home and loved it.

While still considering the Tuft & Needle mattress, I kept reading articles on the internet about the mattress and as the internet often does, by following searches and cookies, I started having pop ups of other similar mattresses. One that caught my eye was Purple. I loved their videos. Their company is the one that drops a person with eggs on his back onto the mattress and the eggs don’t break. The construction of the mattress is a different from the other memory foam mattresses. However, that difference in construction comes at a price. Purple is quite pricey especially for the king size I needed.

One day I spoke with another friend who said two of her college friends, Phil and Nancy, stayed over night with their friends Joe and Nina. Joe and Nina insisted Phil and Nancy take their bed while they slept in the guest room. They wanted Joe and Nina to try their mattress which they loved. Joe and Nina also loved the mattress and they bought one when they got home. I asked for, and received more information. This was information I knew was from real people. The mattress they bought was the Zinus 12 inch Gel Infused Green Tea Memory Foam Mattress and the price was ridiculously low compared to any of the others I had researched.

I Am Ever the Careful Planner and Researcher

I read all the reviews on Amazon, and the only down side people noted was the Zinus Green Tea Memory Foam Mattress smelled and needed to be aired out for several days. I waited until early autumn to order my mattress, so I would need neither heat nor air conditioning and could keep the windows in the bedroom opened. I am by nature a planner. My plan was to sleep on my sofa until the odor went away.

My Zinus mattress arrived when they said it would within a few days of ordering. It was delivered in a box about 40 inches high and 20 by 20 inches wide. It weighed about 80 pounds and was fairly easy for me to just pull along and into my house, although it was too bulky for me to lift. The box smelled as if it had been stored in a horse barn. The only other way to describe the odor is the way fields smell when farmers spread manure on them. This was unexpected. Although the reviews said the mattress smelled, I was expecting a more chemical smell from the memory foam.

Once I had the new mattress on hand, I called a friend and we easily dragged the existing king size mattress off the box spring. I declined her offer to help me set up the new one as I wanted to wash the bed skirt and vacuum the box spring. I would later find that declining her offer was a mistake.

Setting Up My New Mattress

Two days later, I decided to set the new mattress up. It comes with instructions plus I had watched a YouTube video of someone setting up the same mattress. I very carefully opened the box and tilted it on its side. The box was easy to pull off of the enclosed mattress. The mattress was encased in heavy plastic sheeting which I tugged on to easily slide the mattress into my bedroom alongside my box spring. The mattress is folded in half, foot of the bed to top of the bed, and then rolled the way a carpet is rolled.

As the instructions indicated I carefully ripped the outer plastic off the mattress. It says not to use sharp implements. The plastic is scored so it’s easy to rip off. As I did this the mattress started uncoiling so I quickly put it up on the bed. The instructions said to lay it on a flat surface. I figured the box springs counted as a flat surface and served that purpose. Then the instructions say to put it zipper side down (the mattress cover is zippered) and remove the second layer of plastic to let it expand. Before I could get the mattress zipper side down (underneath), in fact, before I could tell which side had a zipper, the plastic started to open itself and the mattress started to expand.

Now I realized the mattress was upside down. I tried to move it but it was not inflated enough to stand up, it only wobbled like a wet noodle but it was too heavy for me to lift it. It continued to grow and I realized I would not be able to flip it, so I just removed the rest of the plastic and let it grow. I retreated to the sofa to sleep that night.

By the next day the mattress had fully inflated and it was far to heavy for me to move by myself. It was far too heavy for even me and my friend to move. I watched two different YouTube videos on how to flip king size mattresses by leveraging them, but those methods did not work. The mattresses shown in the YouTube videos were traditional mattresses, not memory foam. They were also not as thick. The 12 inch memory foam mattress is very heavy. I needed to wait until two friends came over to help.

Make Plans to Remove the Old Mattress

I have paid trash pickup and my carrier was willing to pick up the old mattress for an additional fee of $60.00. I was responsible to bring it to the curb.

One of the suggestions online was to call 1-800-GOTJUNK as they provide a mattress removal service.

In our town, we have what is called a Transfer Station. In the old days, places such as this were called dumps. Our Transfer Station accepts mattresses at no charge. Check with your town's transfer station for rules and fees.

Some towns have clean up weeks where you can put large items to the curb.

Helpful Hints From the Things I Learned

  • Keep in mind the memory foam mattress is very heavy. Plan ahead to have help, particularly if you are ordering a queen or king size.
  • My mattress did not smell; the box it came in did. In the online reviews, so many people indicated the mattress smelled it might be a good idea to plan in case that is true.
  • Two of the sheet sets I had been using did not fit. The pockets were not deep enough. Looking for sheets with pockets big enough to accommodate a 12 inch depth is a good idea.
  • Think about and make arrangements for how you are going to get rid of your old mattress.

What Type of Mattress Do You Have?

I might buy one.

You give a thorough guide on mattress buying, a purchase which I always approach with some trepidation. Friends of ours had such a

bad experience that their pocket-sprung mattress had to be returned as it was so uncomfortable.
